Kindergarteners visit the library once each week for a thirty-minute period where they are encouraged to appreciate literature through three things: visiting the library for usage, experiencing the various elements of a story, and participating in book selection.
There is a prerequisite for library usage in three parts: an introduction to basic library terminology, the proper care and handling of books, and appropriate library behavior. In the introduction to basic library terminology, students are educated on recognizing the various genres of books, and classifying books based on the Dewey decimal system. Next, students are prepared hands-on activities on the proper care and handling of books usually spanning 15~30 minutes. Lastly, students are reminded about appropriate library behavior before and after the library session.
Stories will be presented in a variety of media formats which develops many critical reading skills. Mainly, through stories, students develop the ability to listen and to respond on the selected material. In this way, they can identify character elements, classify and organize the sequence of events, predict events by drawing conclusions, and re-tell the stories that they’ve had experienced.
